Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup (8 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg, beaten
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt
3 cups thinly sliced Granny Smith apples
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (for streusel)
2 tbsp unsalted butter (for streusel)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
In a large bowl, mix 2 cups flour, 3/4 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 cup butter, and 1 egg until a crumbly dough forms
Press half the dough into a 9×13-inch baking dish as the crust
Bake for 15 minutes, then let cool slightly
In another bowl, combine 3 cups sliced apples, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 2 tbsp flour, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, and 1 tbsp lemon juice
Press the dough into the crust, spreading the apples evenly
Top with remaining dough mixed with oats and cinnamon to form the streusel
Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden
Notes
Use a glass baking dish for even heat distribution
Add lemon juice to apples to prevent browning
Chill bars before cutting for cleaner slices
Bars can be stored in an airtight container for 3 days
