Description
Sour Cream Apple Squares are the ultimate comfort dessert, featuring a buttery, walnut-infused crust topped with a moist, tangy apple-cinnamon layer. By using sour cream, these squares achieve a perfectly balanced flavor profile that is neither overly sweet nor heavy. They are simple to prepare and travel beautifully, making them an ideal choice for fall gatherings, potlucks, or a relaxing afternoon treat with coffee.
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups brown sugar (packed)
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup full-fat sour cream
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups chopped Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
In a large bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in the chopped walnuts to complete the base mixture.
Press about two-thirds of the crumb mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan to form the crust.
In the same bowl, combine the remaining crumb mixture with the sour cream, egg, baking soda, cinnamon, vanilla, salt, and chopped apples.
Spread the apple-sour cream mixture evenly over the pressed crust.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top is set and the edges are lightly browned.
Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before slicing into squares.
Notes
For best results, use Granny Smith or another firm, tart apple variety to balance the sweetness. These bars store well in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
